Festive Play Dough

This weekend, while the boys went to get haircuts, Meredith helped me make some Christmas-y play dough!  We followed a basic play dough recipe and then added some fun stuff to make it festive.

Basic recipe:
3 C. flour
3 T olive oil
3/4 C. salt
3 T cream of tartar
3 C. boiling water

1.  Mix together all of the ingredients except for the water.
2.  Add the boiling water and then mix until a dough forms.
3.  Separate the dough into however many different colors/types you want and use food coloring to make them the colors you have chosen.  I find it easiest to use my hands to mix the color in evenly.

To the RED dough, we added peppermint extract (start with 1 T and add more if you want to scent stronger)...this makes the play dough smell like candy canes!
To the GREEN dough, we added peppermint extract and glitter.
To the WHITE dough, we added almond extract and glitter.

Knead the balls of dough until it is the consistency you want.  If it's too sticky, add more flour.  For easier kneading, it's helpful to have your hands coated in flour.

Meredith loved helping.  At one point, she exclaimed, "this is just like being a chef!"  Her favorite part of the process was dumping lots and lots of glitter into the white & green doughs.

Add some Christmas cookie-cutters, and a few other play dough tools and you've got some fun that is sure to last for at least 5 minutes ;)

While Meredith was at school, Shane enjoyed having it all to himself...

Meredith joined in when she got home from preschool (after some time outside in the snow!)...
